One of the most anticipated fashion events is the Met Gala. The Met Costume Institute gala draws celebrities from the entertainment and fashion professions. Kim Kardashian’s Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown, with a sculpted corset in blush satin and a flowing skirt and top created from over 50,000 freshwater pearls and 16,000 crystals, stole the show this year.
Kardashian told Vogue special correspondent Derek Blasberg that she wanted to “feel glamorous” with the look. She didn’t feel pressure this year. She took a shot before coming with her sisters since she wanted to have fun. The 2019 Met Gala dress code was “In honor of Karl,” honoring the late designer Karl Lagerfeld. Kardashian chose pearls to honor Lagerfeld.
Kardashian’s gown took Schiaparelli’s 12 artists 1,000 hours to make. Each pearl strand was strung and draped on her body, displaying exquisite craftsmanship. Kardashian wore white heels, a choker, pearl drop earrings, ruffled sleeves, and a lengthy train.
Pearls and Crystals Dazzle
More than 50,000 freshwater pearls and 16,000 crystals covered Kardashian’s skirt and top. As she went from the Ritz hotel to the car to the carpet, some of the real pearls fell off. North West, who attended the event with her famous mother, “was putting them all in her purse,” she claimed. The garment honored Lagerfeld, who loved pearls and Chanel’s pearl necklaces.
Kardashian’s relationship with Lagerfeld made the Met Gala poignant. Lagerfeld photographed her first fashion shoot and cast Kendall Jenner in his runway presentations. Kardashian said she visited Lagerfeld’s cat Choupette before walking the red carpet.
